The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), situated in Grenoble, France, is
Europe's leading research facility for fundamental research using
neutrons. The ILL operates the brightest neutron source in the world,
reliably delivering intense neutron beams to 40 unique scientific
instruments. The Institute welcomes more than 2000 visiting scientists
per year to carry out world-class research in solid-state physics,
crystallography, soft matter, biology, chemistry and fundamental
physics. Funded primarily by its three founder members: France, Germany
and the United Kingdom, the ILL has also signed scientific collaboration
agreements with 12 other countries. The Science Division currently has a
vacancy for a:
*RESEARCH ENGINEER (**m/f)*
*in programming*
**
*Duties:*
The ILL is part of a European collaborative project called "NMI3-II"
involving different neutron scattering facilities. The NMI3-II software
work package provides funding to evaluate solutions for inter-facility
data analysis software development and produce prototype software. ISIS
and SNS (spallation source-based neutron scattering facilities in the UK
and the USA respectively) are currently developing software called
Mantid (http://www.mantidproject.org <http://www.mantidproject.org/>)
which represents a possible solution for this project. The purpose of
the prototype software is to treat experimental data from instruments at
reactor-based facilities, inelastic scattering data from
Triple-Axis-Spectrometers being a typical example. Once familiar with
the requirements of the NMI3-II software package, you, as a member of
the ILL's Computing for Science group, will collaborate with the
development team and other partners of the project to develop the most
appropriate software prototype.
**
*Qualifications and experience:*
You either hold a PhD in physical sciences with a keen interest and
proven ability in scientific computing, or a Master's degree or
equivalent in computing; you will need experience of a scientific
environment and effective collaboration with scientists. Previous work
with neutrons or X-rays would be an asset.
You must be highly motivated, a good programmer in, for example, Python
and C++, and familiar with collaborative software development using
tools such as SVN or Eclipse.
*Language skills:*
As an international research centre, we are particularly keen to ensure
that we also attract applicants from outside France. You must have a
sound knowledge of English and be willing to learn French. Knowledge of
German would be an advantage.
*Notes:*
This is a fixed-term contract of a minimum 18-month duration/./
Further information can be obtained by contacting the Computing for
Science Group Leader: Dr Mark Johnson, e-mail address: johnson at ill.eu
(please do not send your application to this address) or via

*Benefits:*
Generous company benefits (expatriation allowance), relocation
assistance and language courses may be offered.
*How to apply:*
Please submit your application on line, no later than *18.03.2012*, via
