Deputy Division Head & Lead Engineer - Target Division
The Machine Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Deputy Division Head & Lead Engineer - Target Division.

Description of directorate/division
The ESS Target Division is responsible for the design, prototyping, construction and operation of the Target Station. Around the 16 staff strong division is a collaboration of leading European laboratories and a worldwide network of experts. The Target Station (150 M€) at ESS converts, in a spallation reaction, the 5MW proton beam from the accelerator into neutron beams for the scientific reseach purposes for up to 50 instruments. It is a one-off engineering challenge to provide unprecedented research capabilities. It comprises tailored nuclear systems, neutronic transport optimisation, radiation environments, gas & water cooling, innovative engineering solutions, materials issues and complex handling procedures.      
Description of main responsibilities
To lead the engineering work towards a design which can be successfully constructed and operated, interact with scientific expertise and take part in leading the collaboration. A strong candidate may rise to Division Head during construction phase.

Qualifications

MSc or higher in engineering or similar
Design and operating experience in nuclear installations or similar
Strong proven leadership skills, experience in leading a team and a distributed collaboration
Experience in interacting with experts and scientists
Knowledge of nuclear systems standards and codes
Experience of working in an international environment is essential
Advantages:

Experience with spallation sources and spallation source targets
Experience with operating spallation sources or spallation targets
Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite; knowledge of other European languages would be an advantage

The European Spallation Source ESS AB will design, build and operate a multi-disciplinary, large-scale research infrastructure based on the world’s most powerful neutron source. ESS will provide scientists with unique and powerful neutron scattering instruments for the study of a large range of materials – from polymers and pharmaceuticals to membranes and molecules. The ESS project is partnered by 17 European countries, and hosted by Sweden and Denmark. The ESS will be built in Lund, Sweden, by a collaboration of European scientists and engineers. ESS is planned to produce the first neutrons by 2019. When the facility is in full operation 2025, ESS has around 450 employees.
