Professor David Keen, a member of the ISIS Crystallography group was elected President of the British Crystallographic Association at the annual Spring Meeting held this year at the University of Warwick.
The British Crystallographic Association (BCA) is the UK member organisation of the International Union of Crystallography (IUCr). It acts to promote crystallography - the study of the arrangement of atoms in solids - within the UK through meetings, lectures and wider public engagement activities.
David has been working at ISIS since 1989 within the crystallography group and was responsible for the construction of the current single crystal diffractometer, SXD, and now works on the Gem powder diffractometer.
"Crystallography has an important scientific heritage in the UK, from the pioneering Nobel prize-winning work by the Bragg father and son team through to a host of other Nobel prize winners," he said. "It also underpins - to a greater or lesser extent - the majority of experiments carried out here at ISIS and Diamond."
"It is a great honour to have been elected to this position. Next year is the centenary of Bragg's law, on which crystallography is founded, and the BCA hosts the European Crystallographic Meeting in Warwick University. I want to work with BCA members to make 2013 a celebration of crystallography."
David's scientific interests lie in how the atom arrangements in crystals disorder when heated or squeezed or otherwise persuaded to move away from an ideal arrangement. He has recently been studying sea-shell structure, how crystals might become glasses and unusual flexible structures that shrink on heating.
