The Science Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a Technical coordinator for Neutron Science Support Facilities; 'Laboratory Manager.
Description of directorate/division
The Neutron Science Division supports and coordinates the neutron research by (i) academic activities such as outreach, education, in-house science activities, research collaboration; (ii) collaborative research with various partners and local academic networks; (iii) industry liaison and infrastructure. Various meetings such as Science Symposia, IKON, ESS S&S are co-organized by the division. The neutron science division also organizes the ESS PhD programme.
As far as building the ESS is concerned the Neutron Science Division is responsible for the development of scientific infrastructure by specifying the required user support laboratories, the sample handling and the user access procedures. In this manner, the NSD helps to formulate the policies for designing, building and operating a neutron science driven experimental facility.
Description of main responsibilities
An experienced technical coordinator is sought after to specify, set-up and operate neutron science support facilities at the ESS. The successful candidate will be part of the ESS science directorate and will contribute to specifying the scientific requirements for support facitilites for chemistry, physics and life sciences. He/she will liaise with the scientists at ESS and with local and international partners such as the neighboring MAX-IV laboratories. Interfacing with the ESS conventional facilities construction programme is also a part of the responsibilities. The successful candidate is expected to assist in operating current and future support facilities and laboratories used for technical and scientific process development in anticipation of the research programme at ESS during the Operations Phase.
Qualifications
* Candidates are expected to have a background in physical, chemical and life-science engineering or similar university degrees (master level).
* Experience in operating scientific research laboratories is essential.
* Experience of working in an international environment is essential.
* Experiance of working at an operating neutron science facility would be considered advantageous.
* Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite; knowledge of other European languages would be an advantage.

Duration & Location
The position is permanent with a six-month initial probationary period. Your work place will be situated in Lund, Sweden.
Working hours are general office hours, but occasionally you will need to be flexible and work evenings when required by laboratory process development.

The European Spallation Source ESS AB will design, build and operate a multi-disciplinary, large-scale research infrastructure based on the world’s most powerful neutron source. ESS will provide scientists with unique and powerful neutron scattering instruments for the study of a large range of materials – from polymers and pharmaceuticals to membranes and molecules. The ESS project is partnered by 17 European countries, and hosted by Sweden and Denmark. The ESS will be built in Lund, Sweden, by a collaboration of European scientists and engineers. ESS is planned to produce the first neutrons by 2019. When the facility is in full operation 2025, ESS has around 450 employees.
