MaNDi Instrument Scientist NB50324914

The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States' highest flux reactor based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world's most intense pulsed accelerator based neutron source. Together these facilities operate 24 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out 1000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences for 2000 visiting scientists. HFIR also provides unique facilities for isotope production and neutron irradiation. To learn more about Neutron Sciences at ORNL go to: http://neutrons.ornl.gov

The Biology and Soft Matter Division (BSMD) seeks highly qualified applications for a Staff Scientist position with expertise in neutron macromolecular crystallography. The function of this position is to 1) carry out the duties of an Instrument Scientist for the Macromolecular Neutron Diffractometer (MaNDi), (2) to build and lead a research program in collaboration with scientists from other directorates at ORNL in the fields of macromolecular neutron crystallography, and 3) to develop innovative neutron crystallographic concepts and methodologies that expand and optimize the capabilities of neutron instrumentation in application to macromolecular materials.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

 * Works as part of the MaNDi scientific team to provide user support for MaNDi and will include helping users to develop user proposals, conduct experiments, and analyze data
 * Maintains the instrument and coordinates with support groups to ready the instrument for user experiments
 * Builds and leads a research program with other staff and research groups at ORNL in the area of neutron macromolecular crystallography
 * Conducts and presents high-quality, high-impact research in the field of macromolecular crystallography with a focus on neutron scattering techniques
 * Works with the MaNDi team to conceive, plan, and execute upgrades of the instrument and will include both hardware and software
 * Participates in development of new methods for neutron crystallographic measurements and interpretation of the data
 * Represents SNS at conferences and/or workshops presenting and promoting its capabilities to the structural biology community

 * Ensures compliance with federal, state, and local environment, safety, health, and quality requirements, including ISMS
 * Maintains a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of values and ethics

Qualifications Required:
Successful candidate must have a PhD in crystallography or related scientific field, with at least five years of related experience and demonstrated accomplishments in the field. The applicant must have documented and published experience in developing and applying neutron crystallographic methods to the analysis of macromolecular structures and a strong knowledge of theoretical and computational chemistry or biology. The applicant must have experience with macromolecular neutron scattering instrumentation, molecular biology or chemistry, including the production of perdeuterated macromolecules, optimizing of crystal growth, and refinement of macromolecular structures using neutron data. Experience in other biophysical or chemical characterization methods would be advantageous. The applicant must have a demonstrated ability to organize a creative, independent research program and an outstanding demonstrated record of publication of results in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific meetings. The applicant must have good organizational and management skills and have the ability to interact effectively with colleagues displaying a broad range of expertise and interests. Candidates should be able to work effectively with colleagues in a collaborative research environment and have excellent verbal and written communication skills.
