We have two vacancies for instrument scientists in the ISIS Excitations and Polarised Neutrons group, to work on the LET and MAPS spectrometers respectively. Both are permanent appointments. The closing date for applications is 28th October.

About the roles
We are seeking two Instrument Scientists to join the Excitations & Polarised Neutrons Group at STFC's ISIS facility, on a permanent basis, to work on the LET and MAPS spectrometers respectively.

You will be joining a collaborative working environment with a focus on research excellence. As well as prosecuting your own research programme you will spend time supporting users of the group's instruments before, during and after their experiments so that the scientific output from experiments conducted at ISIS can be maximised.

We are keen that you work towards expanding the user base of the Excitations group's instruments. It is a priority for the group to ensure that the recently commissioned polarisation analysis option on LET is fully exploited by the user community, and that the user base of MAPS is expanded to take advantage of the recent upgrade to the instrument.

Duties will include but are not limited to:


·         Conduct a scientific research program that includes the use of the spectrometers in the group (MERLIN, MAPS, MARI and LET)

·         Help guide the scientific program on the group's instruments

·         Provide technical support to users on LET or MAPS, from proposal submission through experimental time to data analysis, as well as being responsible for safety, maintenance and calibration of LET or MAPS.

·         (LET role) Contribute to technical developments on the LET instrument including on the instrument itself, sample environment and data reduction and analysis software. In particular, the recent addition of polarised neutron analysis on LET means that new ways of working to exploit this new capability fully need to be developed

·         (MAPS role) Contribute to technical developments on the MAPS instrument including on the instrument itself, sample environment and data reduction and analysis software

·         Provide occasional technical and scientific guidance to users on the other instruments in the group when experiments in which you have a strong scientific interest are being conducted on them.

·         Participate fully in the scientific life of the Excitations and Polarised Neutrons group, as well as that of the facility more widely


About you
You will have (or will soon obtain) a PhD in physics, chemistry or materials science, or have equivalent experience.

Your scientific background should be well matched to the group's activities, either in functional materials or strongly correlated electron systems / magnetism.

Evidence of a scientific publication record at PhD or post-doctoral level is required, as well as proven expertise in inelastic neutron scattering and neutron scattering data analysis techniques.

Previous post-doctoral experience in a physical sciences research environment, experience in the design and/or modelling of neutron instruments and a working knowledge of either Python or Matlab would be advantageous but is not essential.
