Job Title: Diffraction Neutron Scattering Scientist

Requisition ID#: 7280

Overview:

The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a neutron instrument scientist for the single crystal diffuse scattering diffractometer CORELLI at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS). CORELLI is a time-of-flight single crystal diffractometer with energy discrimination aiming to study the short-range structural and magnetic diffuse scattering. The instrument supports a diverse science community, attracting scientists from all over the world, carrying out world-class research in physical, chemical and materials sciences. More details about the instrument and its scientific impact can be found at https://neutrons.ornl.gov/corelli<javascript:void(0);> .

As a core instrument team member, you will develop a leading scientific program focused on neutron scattering, and champion developments in instrumentation, sample environment, as well as software to help maintain and further develop the performance of the instruments and expand the user base. A key component of your role is to ensure safe operation and user support of the beamlines, which includes user assistance as local contact, helping with the experimental setup, data acquisition, and data analysis. You will have the opportunity to work with users on a wide range of science topics covered by the instrument. It is expected that you pursue your own research program focusing on the neutron scattering capabilities in combination with the worldwide unique resources ORNL has to offer.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

  * Pursue a high-quality personal research program using neutron diffraction, build national and international collaborations, and publish research results in scientific journals.
  * Assist users as a local contact for experimental setup, data acquisition, user education as appropriate and will ensure users are provided with analyzable data.
  * Attract users from new areas of research, especially related to the topics of your own research efforts, to expand the user community and the impact of neutron scattering in the physical sciences. Champion developments in instrumentation, sample environment, and software to help maintain and further develop the performance of CORELLI and the neutron single crystal diffractometer suite.
  * Ensures compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements
  * You will ensure an inclusive work environment for a diverse community of users, staff, postdocs, and students.
  * As a member of the ORNL scientific community, you will be expected to commit to ORNL's Research Code of Conduct. Our full code of conduct and a statement by the Lab Director's office can be found here: https://www.ornl.gov/content/research-integrity<javascript:void(0);>.

Basic Qualifications:

  * Ph.D. in Chemistry, Physics, Materials Science, or related fields
  * Relevant Postdoctoral experience or equivalent (We encourage applications from all levels, and will hire commensurate with years of experience)

Preferred Qualifications:

  * Experience with neutron and/or X-ray single-crystal diffraction and Rietveld analysis
  * A strong record of productive and creative research demonstrated by publications in peer-reviewed journals and presentations at scientific conferences
  * Strong written and oral communication skills Demonstrated ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team.

Other Requirements:

Please provide a list of publications when applying for this position.

If you are selected for an interview, you will be required to submit a minimum of 2 letters of recommendation.

This position will remain open for a minimum of 5 days after which it will close when a qualified candidate is identified and/or hired.
