Job Title: Postdoctoral Research Associate - Neutron Optics and Polarization

Requisition ID#: 7163

Overview:

Oak Ridge National Laboratory is the largest US Department of Energy science and energy laboratory, conducting basic and applied research to deliver transformative solutions to compelling problems in energy and security.

We are seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will support the Neutron Optics and Polarization Group in the Neutron Technologies Division (NTD), Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) who will focus on developing next-generation spherical neutron polarimetry (SNP) at HFIR and SNS and using spherical neutron poolarimetry and other related methods in neutron scattering to study complex magnetic materials.

As part of our research team, you will work closely with neutron instrument scientists and the sample environment team both at HFIR and SNS to deliver the state-of-art SNP technique on multiple neutron instruments. Your research will involve performing elastic, inelastic and polarized neutron scattering measurements on single crystal samples using the world-leading instruments at HFIR and SNS.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  * Develop and optimize spherical neutron polarimetry for HFIR and SNS instruments
  * Perform neutron scattering studies of magnetic materials using the developed SNP technique and other related methods
  * Develop software required for the operation of the devices and data analysis
  * Collaborate with instrument scientists at HFIR and SNS as well as researchers from universities and other research institutions
  * Publish results in scientific journals, conference proceedings and ORNL technical reports as appropriate
  * Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements
  * Maintain a commitment to the implementation of laboratory values and ethics

Basic Qualifications:

  * A PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Materials Science, or a related field completed within the last 5 years

Preferred Qualifications:

  * Experience in polarized neutron scattering
  * Experience of using neutron scattering methods such as diffraction, spectroscopy, small angle scattering and reflectometry
  * Experience with magnetic materials and measurements
  * A strong background in condensed matter physics
  * Experience in the development of novel experimental techniques as well as a demonstrated proficiency in computer programming and data acquisition.
