Job Title: Group Leader, Labs and Soft Matter

Overview:

We are seeking a Group Leader for Labs and Soft Matter who will provide leadership to a group that strategically advances technical projects and operations for our neutron scattering user program. This position resides in the Labs and Soft Matter Group in the Sample Environment and User Labs Section, Neutron Scattering Division, Neutron Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL).



The Labs and Soft Matter Group is responsible for user sample management and supervision of activities in user labs across HFIR and SNS. The group develops and deploys leading sample environments for soft matter studies at the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR) and Spallation Neutron Source (SNS).



As a Technical Group Leader, you will bring together a group of peers with the primary goal of pursuing global leadership in their field, nurture ORNL's culture among group members, and continue to build and scale up individual excellence and impact. The Technical Group Leader reports to and works closely with the Section Head to implement the group's technical vision; develops group members to enable their career advancement; establishes capabilities that enable programs to excel at the forefront of technical professional expertise; works to solve technical challenges for science, engineering, or technical projects and functions; sets, implements, and models standards for performance of work consistent with Environment, Safety, Security, Health, and Quality (ESH&Q) requirements and business rules; and ensures a diverse and inclusive work environment where every employee feels safe, heard, and appreciated-a workplace that sets an example for the broader community.



Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  *   Develop a vision and implement a cohesive group strategy to ensure the success of the neutron research and user programs at HFIR and SNS and lead new and ongoing technical projects to position the group for future success.
  *   Serve as immediate supervisor for staff members in group.
  *   Assist staff in setting performance goals consistent with the group's strategy and members' long-term career goals.
  *   Actively support users within the scope of the group.
  *   Assume front-line responsibility for safety in the group's laboratories; mentor and empower the Laboratory Space Managers to create a strong safety culture.



Basic Qualifications:

  *   A Ph.D. with a minimum of 4 years of relevant experience, a M.S. with a minimum of 7 years of relevant experience, or a B.S. with 8 years of relevant experience.
  *   Demonstrated experience in leading technical teams.
  *   Demonstrated experience in supporting activities in scientific laboratories and a thorough understanding of environmental, safety, and health issues.
  *   This position requires successful completion of required training, including radiological training.



Preferred Qualifications:

  *   Experience with performing and/or supporting neutron scattering experiments.
  *   Demonstrated experience with evaluating hazards and assessing risks in a chemistry laboratory.
  *   Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  *   Motivated self-starter with the ability to work independently and to participate creatively in collaborative teams across the laboratory.
  *   Ability to function well in a fast-paced research environment, set priorities to accomplish multiple tasks within deadlines, and adapt to ever changing needs.



About Neutron Sciences Directorate:
The Neutron Sciences Directorate (NScD) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) operates the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), the United States' highest flux reactor-based neutron source, and the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), the world's most intense pulsed accelerator-based neutron source.  Together these facilities operate 30 instruments for neutron scattering research, each year carrying out in excess of 1,000 experiments in the physical, chemical, materials, biological and medical sciences for more than 3,000 visiting scientists.
