Requisition Id: 9664
Overview:
Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a Neutron Production Systems Mechanical Designer for the Second Target Station (STS) project. The STS is a >$1Billion, Department of Energy project to be constructed at the ORNL Spallation Neutron Source (SNS). The STS will provide wholly new capabilities for the study of a broad range of materials with neutron scattering and support thousands of users from the physical, materials, and applied sciences and industry. The science capabilities provided by the instrument suite at the STS will complement those of the two existing DOE Office of Science neutron scattering user facilities at ORNL, the First Target Station (FTS) of the SNS and the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR). The STS will deliver the highest peak brightness of cold neutrons in the world, which together with advances in neutron optics, instrumentation, and detectors, will ensure US leadership in neutron scattering for decades to come.
The STS Target Systems group is responsible for the design, fabrication, installation, and testing of all hardware necessary to convert the incoming 700 kW, 15 Hz proton beam into 22 beams of moderated neutrons.
Job Description:
The STS Mechanical Designer is responsible for development of designs for Neutron Production Systems components, many of which are first of a kind or one of a kind. The Mechanical Designer produces high quality engineering design packages. The successful candidate will collect and maintain records, technical drawings and documents for STS Target Systems. This role reports to the STS Neutron Production Systems Group Leader and interfaces with lead engineers, scientists and other designers across the project. The STS Mechanical Designer will be responsible for reviewing and checking the work of peer designers and draftsmen.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
* Takes complex engineering designs from conception through manufacture and build
* Successfully communicates and collaborates with engineers, scientists and analysts throughout the design process
* Creates engineering models and drawing packages using a computer-aided design (Creo and 3-D CAD) graphics workstation
* Produces multi-system installation drawings and specifications
* Prepares clear, complete and accurate working plans and detail drawings from layouts, rough or detailed sketches and from written or verbal instructions
* Checks detail drawings to assure compliance with engineering codes and drafting standards
* Works with the Document Control Center to help ensure accuracy and completeness of drawings
* Act as a senior coordinator in managing and merging large models
* Mentor less experienced designers in work methods for handling of models for the large facility
* Prepare and coordinate handover of 3D models for analysis such as CFD, structural and/or Neutronic calculations.
Basic Qualifications:
* Associates (AS) degree in an engineering or scientific discipline. An equivalent combination of education and design experience may be considered in lieu of an AS degree
* A minimum of seven years of experience in design of complex mechanical systems
* At least five years using Creo/Pro-E. Extensive experience with other CAD packages may be considered in lieu of Creo/ProE experience.
* Knowledge of the technical concepts of drafting and engineering principles, codes, and standards
* Working knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T)
* Ability to communicate design concepts through presentations to engineers and other designers
Preferred Qualifications:
* Experience working in an accelerator or nuclear environment
* Expert level knowledge of GD&T
* Experience with Creo skeletons and top down design
* Experience working in a team environment with other designers working together on large (thousands to ten thousand+ parts and subassemblies) assemblies
* Experience with schematics and P&IDs
* Experience in weldment design and American Welding Society (AWS) symbology
* Experience designing following pressure vessel codes
* Experience in with manufacturing and working with vendors and fabricators
* Experience with Spaceclaim
