Requisition Id 13153

Overview:

The Neutronics Group within the Neutron Technologies Division<https://neutrons.ornl.gov/ntd> at Oak Ridge National Laboratory<https://www.ornl.gov/> (ORNL) is looking for a neutronics analyst, who can contribute to our mission of operating and further developing the Spallation Neutron Source<https://neutrons.ornl.gov/sns> (SNS) and the High-Flux Isotope Reactor<https://neutrons.ornl.gov/hfir> (HFIR) as a world-class neutron sources and user facilities. We strive towards delivering highest-intensity neutron beams from the source to the instruments, ensure that the instruments are shielded to meet the radiation protection requirements, and minimize the radiation induced background in the scattering instruments. Also, we cover the neutronics analysis aspects of the neutron source life cycle from optimizing neutron beam production to the disposal of the highly activated components at their end of service life. Upgrade projects are currently in progress to improve the neutron source facilities, both HFIR and SNS, to maintain the US and ORNL leadership in neutron scattering science. You will be working in a multidisciplinary team of scientists, engineers, and designers, and apply your nuclear analysis skills to finding solutions for challenging problems that we are facing at our facilities.

As a U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Science national laboratory, ORNL has an extraordinary 80-year history of solving the nation’s biggest problems. We have a dedicated and creative staff of over 6,000 people! Our vision for diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) is to cultivate an environment and practices that foster diversity in ideas and in the people across the organization, as well as to ensure ORNL is recognized as a workplace of choice. These elements are critical for enabling the execution of ORNL’s broader mission to accelerate scientific discoveries and their translation into energy, environment, and security solutions for the nation.

Major Duties/Responsibilities:

  * Perform neutronic analyses with state-of-the-art Monte Carlo radiation transport codes to calculate quantities of interest such as moderator neutron performance, radiation-induced material damage estimates, and nuclear heating.
  * Contribute with nuclear design analyses to projects working in interdisciplinary teams with engineers and designers.
  * Communicate your findings and analyses reliably to your collaborators and ORNL management.
  * Prepare technical reports, documentation, and presentations for design reviews and management.
  * Develop shielding solutions for SNS target station systems, neutron beamlines, and scattering instruments.
  * Contribute to the development and maintenance of nuclear analysis tools and nuclear data to support the Group's complex analysis needs and the overall research and development efforts of the organization.
  * Display ES&H understanding and discipline that leads to outstanding safety performance.
