> PhD projects satisfying the criteria for the academic in-house mission of the ILL's PhD programme are put into competition via a rigorous selection process. Project selection is a two-stage procedure involving evaluation by in-house review panels and final decision by the ILL directors.
> Notification of short-listed projects will be sent out around mid-January 2025. Final selection should take place in February 2025, when the ILL supervisors of the short-listed projects will be invited to defend their projects in an oral presentation.
>
> Scientific excellence is the most important selection criterion.
> Further selection criteria are:
> - Contribution to the academic life at the ILL
> - Quality of training of future experts in neutron science
> - Possibility for the ILL supervisors to strengthen their scientific profile and to enhance their scientific networks
> - Quality of the 3-year PhD work plan as described in the scientific case, including the anticipation of milestones to be achieved and risk analysis
> - A substantial co-funding by the participating university
> In addition, the ILL management has to make sure that a proper balance is achieved over scientific topics, ILL supervisors, ILL instrumentation groups, as well as the national distribution of host universities.
> A student candidate may be proposed for the submitted PhD project, in which case the student's CV and cover letter should be attached to the proposal. Although this is NOT a prerequisite for a valid PhD proposal, a strong student candidate would be a plus, albeit not a guarantee, for acceptance of the PhD project. Full consideration will be given to PhD proposals not containing a student candidate according to the criteria listed above.

> **** Please note that this email is for the nominal annual call for PhD projects, which this year takes place separately but roughly simultaneously with the new call for "NextStep" PhD proposals (within the COFUND program). The Nextstep Call will cover scientific fields in Pillar 2 of the Marie Sklodowska Curie Actions <https://www.horizon-europe.gouv.fr/sites/default/files/2021-06/pr-sentation-postdoctoral-fellowships-european-research-agency-3293.pdf>.
