The conversion of the FRM II from highly enriched uranium (HEU) to low
enriched uranium (LEU) presents unique reactor physics challenges. This
presentation will provide an overview of the reactor physics
considerations in the design of an LEU core, focusing on key parameters
that influence its neutronic and thermal-hydraulic behavior. The change
in moderation ratio due to the modified fuel and fuel element geometry
will be discussed, highlighting its effects on the neutron flux
distribution and the reactor performance. In addition, the influence of
secondary sources on the fuel element will be examined, particularly in
the context of the scientific performance of the instruments. A crucial
aspect of the conversion is the use of monolithic Uranium-Molybdenum, a
novel high-density LEU fuel, which requires thorough characterization to
provide accurate input data for reactor simulations. The presentation
will highlight the importance of experimental validation and fuel
qualification to ensure the safe operation of the converted reactor
without losing scientific performance.
