Dear colleagues and GISANS-interested scientists,
A first community workshop of the initiative “GISANS – Advancing Data Reduction and Analysis” discussed current needs in instrumentation and data reduction for GISANS. Discussions focused around multiple scattering, normalization and background handling, as well as magnetic and polarization-analysed measurements.
Thanks to broad input, it was concluded that coordinated standards, improved modelling tools, and clearly defined data and metadata structures are essential to advance GISANS analysis (see the workshop summary:
https://wiki.cansas.org/index.php?title=/GISANS_-_Advancing_data_reduction_and_analysis_Workshop#1%22_2026-03-17/18).
Work plans now include:
1. Multiple Scattering
Develop practical methods to identify and quantify the multiple scattering that arises in GISANS experimentally and integrate modelling tools (e.g. Monte Carlo).
2. Background Handling
Establish system and instrument dependent best practices and integrate background modelling into fitting workflows.
3. Normalization
Define standardized, normalization procedures with reproducible uncertainty treatment.
4. Data Formats
Develop a common reduced-data format (e.g. NeXus-based) that preserves essential metadata for resolution, normalization, background, and uncertainties to enable better sharing of analysis tools.
To move forward and to develop groups to address these issues, we kindly ask for your contribution by completing the following surveys. The aim is to allow those who could not participate in the workshop to become involved. Results will be evaluated and discussed in upcoming meetings. The goal is to:
* Identify current challenges and steps to resolve them
* Compare workflows across facilities
* Provide a base for harmonizing GISANS practices
We would greatly appreciate completion of those surveys that interest you at your earliest convenience, and no later than the end of June, to allow sufficient time for evaluation and planning of future work and meetings.

Thank you very much for your time and contribution to strengthening the GISANS community. We apologise if you have already received this message by other channels.
With our best regards,
