</span></b><span lang="EN-US">The Data Management and Software Centre (DMSC) of the European Spallation Source (ESS) is tasked with the mission to assist users of ESS with all their scientific computing needs. This includes experimental control, data curation,
reduction and analysis, modelling and simulations, user office software and associated hardware and infrastructure. ESS has two locations, DMSC located in Copenhagen, Denmark, and with experimental facilities and the head quarter located in Lund, Sweden.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><strong><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">Description of main responsibilities</span></strong><b><span lang="EN-US"><br>
</span></b><span lang="EN-US">As an instrument data scientist for Spectroscopy (i.e. inelastic and quasi-elastic neutron scattering) at the European Spallation Source you will act as an interface between DMSC and one or more instrument teams, specifically the
teams for the Extreme Environment Spectrometer BIFROST and Cold Chopper Spectrometer CSPEC. This is a new type of position at ESS and therefore the candidate has an opportunity to shape the role in collaboration with other ESS instrument data scientists and
corresponding stakeholders. However, the role as instrument data scientist will encompass the following tasks:<o:p></o:p></span></p>

<span lang="EN-US">Advancing the domain of neutron spectroscopy with cutting edge data science and data analysis methods.<o:p></o:p></span></li></ul>
<p><span lang="EN-US">Focus will initially be on ensuring that scientific user software is ready for operation of the instruments. The instrument data scientist will therefore play a central role during commissioning of the instruments. <o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><span lang="EN-US">The candidate will become a member of the Data Reduction, Analysis, and Modelling (DRAM) group at DMSC and report to the corresponding Group Leader, but is at the same time expected to be an active member of the relevant instrument teams.
<span class="inline-comment-marker">For this reason, the instrument data scientist is expected to spend significant time in both Copenhagen and Lund.</span><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><span lang="EN-US">The instrument data scientist is strongly encouraged to maintain an active research profile in the domain of an active research profile in the domain of THz excitations, while keeping the task of enabling users to do world leading science
a first priority.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p><span lang="EN-US">The instruments that currently are being constructed for spectroscopy are the indirect geometry spectrometer BIFROST and the direct geometry spectrometer CSPEC, which will be supplemented with the spectrometers TREX, MIRACLES, and VESPA

<p><strong><span lang="EN-US" style="font-family:"Calibri",sans-serif">Qualifications</span></strong><b><span lang="EN-US"><br>
</span></b><span lang="EN-US">For this position it is essential that the candidate has experience with inelastic and / or quasi-elastic neutron scattering experiments including associated data processing, analysis, and modelling. Moreover, the candidate should
have an interest in utilizing those skills for helping users at the ESS. Python is used extensively at ESS for data processing and the candidate should therefore be able to become proficient in using Python for solving scientific problems.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
