scattering in Europe is entering a period of major
transition, marked by a significant reduction in
experimental capacity and the emergence of new concepts for
neutron facilities aimed at addressing this evolving

sufficient access for a broad scientific, industrial and

(Innovative COmpact NEutron Facility) is the French project
for a new High-Current Accelerator-driven Neutron Source
(HiCANS), jointly developed by CEA and CNRS. Based on a 25
MeV, 80 mA proton accelerator, ICONE will combine
compactness, modularity and high-performance pulsed neutron
production. Two target stations will provide complementary
time structures: a High-Flux mode using long pulses and a
High-Resolution mode based on shorter pulses.

flagship facilities such as ESS and ILL and contributing to
a more distributed, flexible and sustainable European
neutron ecosystem.
