Job Opportunities
ISIS Facility - Experimental Scientists
based at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Oxfordshire, UK
The ISIS Facility at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory is the worldâs most
intense pulsed neutron source. It supports over 500 experiments each year
over a wide range of condensed matter science. Because of an expanding
programme there are now a number of vacancies for experimental scientists in
the Spectroscopy and Support Division. Research activities are focused on
magnetic excitations, lattice dynamics in crystalline and amorphous systems,
molecular spectroscopy, quantum liquids and phase transitions. Experiments
are carried out in collaboration with national and international scientists
from universities and industry.
The successful applicants for these demanding jobs will take joint
responsibility for the effective operation of one of the instruments, advise
external users on the optimisation of their experiments, initiate and manage
development projects, including software. They will be expected to pursue
actively their own scientific programme and take full part in the scientific
life of the facility.
The posts require knowledge of inelastic neutron scattering and/or a
scientific background in magnetism or lattice dynamics and phase
transitions, or molecular spectroscopy. A flair for experimental work and
instrument development is highly desirable. Experience in programming, in
particular the use of visualisation packages is also desirable. Working
within a team and in close contact with the user community, the candidate
should also have excellent interpersonal skills and should be able to work
independently. A flexible approach to working hours is required.
All appointments require a good science-based degree (1st or upper 2nd
class honours) plus an additional 3 years relevant experience. A PhD in one
of the physical sciences would be an advantage.
The appointments will be for a fixed term of 3 years with the possibility of
permanency. The salary level is between £14,828 and £24,233. Appointment
will normally be at the band minimum, but relevant experience will be taken
into account. Further progression is dependent on performance. A
non-contributory pension scheme and a generous leave allowance are also offered.
For an application form please contact the Recruitment Office, R71,
Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Chilton, Didcot, Oxon., OX11 0QX or
telephone (01235) 445435 (answerphone) quoting our reference VN1512.
More information about CCLRC and ISIS is available from CCLRCâs World Wide
Web pages (http://www.cclrc.ac.uk).
All applications must be returned by 22 August 1997.
CCLRC is committed to Equal Opportunities. A non-smoking policy is in
operation at the laboratory.
