Postdoctoral Position in Lujan Center Strain Team - PD97135 



The Materials Science and Technology Division (MST Division) and the Manuel
Lujan Jr. Neutron
Scattering Center at the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center (LANSCE
Division) have a postdoctoral
opportunity related to the study of engineering materials using neutron
diffraction. At the Lujan Center,
neutron diffraction is used extensively to study polycrystalline
deformation and its effects in a variety of
applied and scientific problems. Recent work has included studies of
stress-induced transformations in
shape memory alloys, creep in co-deformable metal matrix composites,
spatially resolved measurements
in loaded beryllium compact tension specimens, and macrostrain profiling in
technologically relevant
components. 

Experience in neutron diffraction (preferably in stress measurement),
demonstrated interpersonal, written,
and verbal skills, and the ability to work in a team environment are
required. Experience in finite element
and/or texture analysis would be advantageous. The successful candidate
will have opportunities to
pursue existing programs and/or to be involved with the design and
construction of a new spectrometer,
called SMARTS, dedicated to engineering strain measurements and will join a
group of two staff members
and two postdoctoral research associates currently working in the area of
neutron diffraction stress
measurement. The team provides support to LANL research programs in the
area of stress measurement
using both neutron and X-ray diffraction (using an 18-kW rotating anode
with a Huber stress goniometer).

A Ph.D. Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or related field
completed within the last three years
or soon to be completed is required. Annual starting salaries range from
$45,700 to $49,300, plus a
generous, comprehensive benefits package. Candidates may compete for a
Director's Fellowship and
outstanding candidates may be considered for the prestigious J. Robert
Oppenheimer Fellowship
