Keely-Rutherford Fellowship
Rutherford Appleton Laboratory and Wadham College Oxford
____

The Rutherford Appleton Laboratory in conjunction with Wadham College
invites applications for a joint research fellowship. This collaboration is
intended to promote the research interests of the Laboratory and the
University whilst supporting a promising research scientist at an early
stage in his or her career. The appointment, which will be at post-doctoral
level, will be made within the ISIS Science Department. ISIS operates the
world’s most intense pulsed neutron source. It supports over 500
experiments each year over a wide range of condensed matter science.
The successful candidate will be a member of the ISIS Excitations Group and
of the Neutron and X-ray Scattering Group of the Department of Physics at
Oxford University. The research interests of both groups include the spin
dynamics in magnetic systems (from model low dimensional systems to high
temperature superconductors), the lattice dynamics of crystalline and
amorphous systems and the dynamical behaviour of quantum liquids. The
candidate is expected to pursue actively his or her own experimental
scientific programme in collaboration with both the ISIS and the University
groups and also to take part in the ISIS user programme.

The successful candidate will be elected to a Junior Research Fellowship of
the College, and, as such, he or she will have lunching and dining rights
and be entitled to single living accommodation in College (at a modest
rent). The Fellow will be a member of the Governing Body of the College and
may optionally gain some teaching experience in College, though the main
responsibility of the post is to undertake research. The College has an
extensive commitment to the Physical Sciences: it has four Fellows in
Physics, two in Chemistry and two in Engineering, as well as two in Applied
Mathematics and one in Computation. The College can thus provide an
opportunity for contact with many research groups within Oxford University.
More information is available from Wadham College’s World Wide Web pages (
http://www.wadham.oxford.ac.uk ).

The Fellowship will be tenable for an initial period of 3 years, extendible
to an overall maximum of 5 years. The stipend is between £14,828 and
£24,233. Appointment will normally be at the minimum, but relevant
experience will be taken into account. Further progression is dependent on
performance. A non-contributory pension scheme is also offered. For
further details about the post contact Dr U Steigenberger (Tel.: 44 - 1235 -
445145, e-mail: usm at isise.rl.ac.uk). Applicants should send a CV, an
outline research proposal and the names of two professional referees to the
Recruitment Office, R71, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Chilton, Didcot,
Oxon OX11 0QX, UK, quoting reference VN1578/98. More information about
CCLRC and ISIS is available from CCLRC’s World Wide Web pages (
http://www.cclrc.ac.uk ).

All applications must be returned by : 13 March 1998

CCLRC and Wadham College are committed to Equal Opportunities; CCLRC has a
non-smoking policy.
