SNS Workshop and Oak Ridge Neutron Users Meeting

To All Neutron Users:

The funding, construction line item, and out year funding for the
Spallation Neutron Source (SNS), a 1 MW pulsed neutron facility to be built
at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, was included in the Clinton
Administration Fiscal Year 1999 budget.  Both the Senate and the House of
Representatives have recommended a construction line item and significant
funding for 1999.  The exact amount of funding will be settled in
conference prior to October 1 but it now looks fairly certain that work
will commence in October on the detailed design of the SNS.  The current
neutron source at Oak Ridge, the High Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR), will see
major advances in its capabilities with planned upgrades, including a new
cold source, over the next few years.  In view of the importance of these
initiatives to the neutron community in the US, and worldwide, we would
encourage anyone with an interest to attend the:

SNS Neutron Instrumentation Workshop and Oak Ridge Neutron Users Meeting

                          November 9-11, 1998
                          Hyatt Regency Knoxville
                          Knoxville, TN

The purpose of the Instrumentation Workshop is to discuss scientific
community needs for instrumentation at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS).
 Topics to be covered include: 

     *Update on the current status and expected performance of the
Spallation Neutron source. 
     *Priorities for the initial suite of 10 instruments to be built at the
high power target station as part of the SNS reference design. 
     *The science case for a second target/instrument suite optimized for
long wavelength neutrons. 

In addition, the first meeting of Oak Ridge Neutron Users will be held.
This will include current and potential users of both the SNS and the High
Flux Isotope Reactor (HFIR).  Topics to be covered include:  

     *Approval of By-Laws for the Users Group 
     *Discussion of user policies and concerns for SNS and HFIR 
     *Presentations describing upgrades to the neutron scattering
facilities at HFIR currently underway 

Anyone with an interest in the use of neutron scattering to study the
structure and dynamics of materials is encouraged to attend.  There may be
limited funds available to help defray the costs of attending the workshop
for participants who could not otherwise attend.
