NEUTRON SPIN ECHO SPECTROMETER INSTRUMENT SCIENTIST
NIST CENTER FOR NEUTRON RESEARCH
NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF STANDARDS AND TECHNOLOGY
The NIST Center for Neutron Research (NCNR) is seeking qualified
candidates for a position as an instrument scientist to assist with
the scientific and user programs on the NCNR's now operational
Neutron Spin Echo Spectrometer (NSE). A Ph.D. in experimental Soft
Condensed Matter Physics, Materials Science or Chemical Physics who
has studied dynamical phenomena using scattering techniques or
nuclear magnetic resonance is sought to share the responsibilities
and opportunities associated with the application of NSE to elucidate
dynamical processes occurring on nanosecond time scales in
macromolecular and other types of systems. The responsibilities
include assisting visiting researchers conduct experiments and reduce
data; testing and calibrating the spectrometer; and participating in
instrument and equipment development projects. The position affords
the opportunity for independent and collaborative research using the
NSE and the NCNR's other cold neutron spectrometers, which now
include a high resolution disk-chopper spectrometer and a
backscattering spectrometer. Together these instruments provide the
widest dynamic range for neutron spectroscopy in the U.S.
The initial appointment will be for two years with the possibility of
a one- or two-year extension. The salary range is $45,000 to
$60,000, depending on qualifications and experience.
