SANS INSTRUMENT SCIENTIST
NIST CENTER FOR NEUTRON RESEARCH
NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF STANDARDS AND TECHNOLOGY
The NIST Center for Neutron Research (NCNR) is seeking candidates for a
position as a Small-Angle Neutron Scattering (SANS) Instrument Scientist.
The SANS instrumentation at the NCNR comprises two 30-m, and one 8-m, long
pinhole geometry instruments, and a recently commissioned perfect-crystal
diffractometer for ultra-high resolution measurements (USANS). Combined
these instruments span four orders of magnitude in Q-space corresponding to
structural features in materials ranging from 1nm to over 1000 nm.
Associated with these instruments are six scientific staff with broad
interests in relating nano- to microscale structure in materials and
macromolecules to bulk properties, processing and function; in conducting
research that advances measurement capabilities and analysis methods; and,
in promoting the use of these facilities by the general scientific community.
The position requires a Ph.D. in experimental Condensed Matter Physics,
Chemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering or Structural Biology,
along with good communication skills. Experience in microstructure or
macromolecular structure characterization using x-ray or neutron diffraction
techniques is highly desirable. Responsibilities include assisting visiting
researchers in conducting experiments and reducing data, instrument testing
and calibration, and participating in equipment and software development
projects. These duties are intended to occupy no more than two-thirds of
the instrument scientist's time to enable him or her to conduct independent
or collaborative research using the SANS instruments and other facilities at
the NCNR. Appointment will initially be for two years with the possibility
of extension for up to two additional years. Salary is in the range from
$45,000 to $55,000 depending on qualifications and experience. Expressions
