EMBO Practical Course on Solution Scattering from Biological Macromolecules
EMBL, Hamburg Outstation, September 5-14, 2001
The objective of the course is to familiarize young biochemists with state
of the art methods in solution scattering from biological macromolecules
emphasizing the major advances in the field over the last decade.
The course aims for scientists with a research focus in structural biology
but with little or no experience in solution scattering. These include
scientists active in protein crystallography, NMR, electron microscopy etc
whose research could be complemented by solution scattering. The course
covers the basics of X-ray and neutron scattering, mathematical methods,
instrumentation, data collection, modelling and use of data analysis
programs. The students are encouraged to bring their own samples for X-ray
synchrotron scattering experiments and the results will be analyzed during
the practical tutorials.
Invited lecturers/instructors include: Katherine Brown (London, UK),
Fernando Diaz (Madrid, Spain), Sebastian. Doniach (Stanford, USA), Otto
Glatter (Graz, Austria), Michel Koch (EMBL, Hamburg Outstation), Stephan
König (Halle, Germany), Peter Laggner (Graz, Austria), Jörg Langowski
(Heidelberg, Germany), Heinrich Stuhrmann (Geesthacht, Germany), Garcia de
la Torre (Murcia, Spain), Patrice Vachette (Orsay, France), Vladimir Volkov
(Moscow, Russia), Guiseppe Zaccai (Grenoble, France).
Organizers: Dmitri Svergun, EMBL, Hamburg Outstation and Regine Willumeit,
GKSS Research Center, Geesthacht. The Course is supported in part by the EU
Round Table on Synchrotron Radiation.
Funds are available to cover living and travel expenses of students from
EMBC countries. The number of student participants is limited to 15-20.
Those wishing to attend should send an application and a CV and, for
predoctoral students only, a recommendation letter from a senior scientist,
to
