The Hahn-Meitner-Institute in Berlin is a German National Laboratory and a
member of the Hermann von Helmholtz Association of National Research Centres
and has about 850 employees. The work of the HMI is concentrated mainly on
solid-matter and materials research, and in particular on the topics 'struc-
tural research' and 'solar energy research'. In the field of 'structural
research'mostly methods based on ion or neutron beams are used.

Post-doctoral position
Experimental physicist
Contract of limited duration until 31.03.2003;
Salary from 70000 - 90000 DM per year.
The use of 3He polarisation filters opens new experimental fields in the re-
search with polarised neutron. Therefore, investigations on such filter cells
and the construction of a filling station to supply them is a focal point in
the instrumental development programme at the HMI. Successful candidates will
work in an application-oriented as well as versatile way in an international
project in the field. The aim is to realise further progress in the develop-
ment of both the filling station and the 3He filter itself, in the last to
enable routine operation.
The candidate holds a PhD in physics and shows a good knowledge in atomic phy-
sics and in optics. He/she has experience in laser application, vacuum techni-
ques and - in particular - in instrumental development. Knowledge in surface
science and familiarity in neutron scattering will be an advantage.
