Research Scientist position at the ILL (Grenoble, France)

The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) is an international research institute
funded by France, Germany and the United Kingdom. Agreements on scientific
collaboration have also been signed with Austria, Italy, Spain,
Switzerland, the Czech Republic and Russia. The Institute operates the most
powerful source of neutrons in the world, a 58MW reactor, which was
completely refurbished in 1995. The reactor forms the basis for a programme
of research covering a wide variety of fields, supplying neutrons to a
broad range of instruments which are available to scientists from the
member countries.
The ILL has an opening in its Large Scale Structures Group for a
RESEARCH SCIENTIST (STRUCTURAL BIOLOGY).

The post represents an excellent opportunity for a young postdoctoral
scientist to develop his expertise, broaden his experience and interact
with leading scientists from around the world. More experienced scientists
on detachment will also be considered.

The Large Scale Structures Group of the ILL operates 6 publicly funded and
2 CRG (Collaborating Research Group) instruments. These comprise
small-angle scattering instruments, reflectometers and diffractometers,
adapted to the study of structure on a scale of 1-100 nm in physical,
chemical or biological systems. There is currently an opening for a
scientist interested in the structure of biological macromolecules to work
in the field of neutron protein crystallography and/or membrane
diffraction. The instruments involved are LADI, an image plate
diffractometer for high resolution protein crystallography, DB21 a long
wavelength diffractometer for low resolution studies of crystals of large
macromolecular systems and D16 a diffractometer specialised in part for
membrane diffraction.

The successful candidate will have experience in biological crystallography
and an interest in both instrumental and software development in this
field. The ILL is currently making a particular effort in the field of
structural biology and to this end is an active partner with EMBL, ESRF and
IBS in the Partnership for Structural Biology a dynamic on-site
collaboration between several Grenoble-based institutes. The presence
within this partnership of a new facility for in vivo Deuteration will give
the successful candidate the opportunity of carrying out his/her own
research in the best-equipped environment for biological neutron
diffraction in the world.

The successful candidate will be offered a fixed-term contract, the
duration of which will under no circumstances exceed five (5) years. In
addition to a competitive salary, certain benefits (reimbursement of
removal expenses, adaptation allowance, etc.) may be offered.
Further information on the LSS group and its activities can be obtained at

A. Timmins (Tel: (33) 4 76 20 72 63, timmins at ill.fr).

An application with curriculum vitae, a list of publications and the names
of two academic referees should be sent, quoting reference 03/26, no later
than 01.09.2003 to:

Dr. P.A. Timmins, Head of LSS Group - INSTITUT LAUE-LANGEVIN
