Dear Gentle Person:
Could you please very kindly help out and circulate/publicize
the NSF International Materials Institutes (IMI) Fellowship Program,
"ADVANCED NEUTRON SCATTERING NETWORK FOR EDUCATION AND RESEARCH
(ANSWER): WITH A FOCUS ON MECHANICAL BEHAVIOR," as shown in the
attached file and below.
Thanx! and Best Wishes!
NEUTRON MATERIALS SCIENCE FELLOWSHIP PROGRAM
THE NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION INTERNATIONAL MATERIALS INSTITUTES [IMI]
ADVANCED NEUTRON SCATTERING NETWORK FOR EDUCATION AND RESEARCH
[ANSWER]: WITH A FOCUS ON MECHANICAL BEHAVIOR OF MATERIALS
BACKGROUND
A five-year International Materials Institutes [IMI] Program,
Advanced Neutron Scattering netWork for Education and Research
[ANSWER], proposed by the University of Tennessee and Oak Ridge
National Laboratory [ORNL], has been funded by the National Science
Foundation [NSF] to create an international neutron-scattering
network for innovative, multidisciplinary materials education and
research in the area of "mechanical behavior of advanced materials."
GOALS
The goal is to use the Neutron Materials Science Fellowship Program
to provide graduate students with international experience on neutron
research. The core research thrust areas include [1] in-situ studies
of mechanical behavior; [2] real-time measurements of internal
stresses; [3] in-situ studies of microstructures; and [4] theoretical
modeling that complements the experimental studies.
We need more graduate students using neutron scattering as a key
experimental tool for the study of materials. Graduate students
funded by this program are expected to make use of neutron-scattering
facilities outside the US to enhance international experiences.
FUNDING, OPERATION, AND BROAD IMPACT OF THE NEW PROGRAM
A $56K/year for five years will be provided to broaden and expand the
neutron materials science research for international experiences,
depending on the continual funding from NSF. Eight fellowships
[$7K/year for each fellowship] will be provided for using the neutron
facilities outside the US to broaden international experiences.
Preference will be given to graduate students who are US citizens
and/or permanent residents. Limited fellowships could be given to
research associates or industrial participants who are US citizens
and/or permanent residents. The funded graduate students, research
associates, or industrial participants are expected to give
presentations at the IMI workshop, and provide yearly reports. Note
that the first IMI workshop will be at Knoxville, Tennessee, November
17-20, 2003.
To apply for the new Program funding, faculty members or industrial
participants who are interested in neutron-scattering studies of
materials should submit a proposal by July 20, 2003. The proposal
should include: [1] a brief proposal outlining the objectives,
science, approaches, which neutron facilities outside the US will be
used, and how this effort will expand the international experiences
of graduate students, research associates, or industrial personnel,
[2] the impact of the proposed work, including prospects for
increasing external funding, and [3] the credentials of the graduate
students, research associates, or industrial personnel, being
proposed for funding. Note that the proposal is limited to six
pages.
The funding will be awarded annually. For continued funding,
presentations of papers at the IMI workshops, international
conferences, including neutron conferences, and publications in
peer-reviewed journals are necessary.
