Physicist/Engineer position at the ILL (Grenoble, France)
The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) is an international fundamental research
institute funded by France, Germany and the United Kingdom. Agreements on
scientific collaboration have also been signed with Austria, the Czech
Republic, Italy, Russia, Spain and Switzerland. The Institute operates a
high neutron flux research reactor, which is used to conduct experiments in
the following disciplines: structure and dynamics of condensed matter, with
applications in physics, biology and materials science, and nuclear and
elementary-particle physics. The instruments at ILL are available to guest
scientists who are assisted by the Institute's scientists. The Projects and
Techniques Division currently has a vacancy in its Neutron Optics Service
for a PHYSICIST / ENGINEER (m/f).
The successful candidate will lead a small team working on the development
and production of multilayer optical components for the Institute's neutron
beam lines. S/he will be responsible for the multilayer production and
development programme and also for the running of the laboratory equipment
(two magnetron sputtering machines, X ray and neutron diffractometer).
He/she will interact closely with ILL instrument scientists in optimising
the performance of their instruments using analytical and ray-tracing
techniques.
Qualifications: Ph.D in physics or a physical science.
Experience:
- Experience in techniques of deposition and characterisation of thin-film
multilayers, preferably in the domain of neutron or X-ray mirrors
- Good knowledge in the fields of materials and magnetism
- Good interpersonal skills
- Capable of self-motivation and independent work
- Experience in project management and in the supervision of skilled staff
Experience also desirable in neutron scattering instrumentation, neutron
reflectometry, and ray-tracing simulation techniques.
Grading: Engineer. Salary: commensurate with qualifications and experience.
This post is permanent.
