Leader of the ILL Three-axis Spectrometry Group

The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL) is an international fundamental research 
institute funded by France, Germany and the United Kingdom. Agreements on 
scientific collaboration have also been signed with Austria, the Czech 
Republic, Italy, Russia, Spain and Switzerland. The Institute operates the 
most powerful source of neutrons in the world, a 58MW reactor, which was 
completely refurbished in 1995. The reactor forms the basis for a programme 
of research covering a wide variety of fields, from solid-state physics to 
structural biology, supplying neutrons to a broad range of instruments 
which are available to scientists from the member countries. An ambitious 
programme of instrumentation renewal has been launched to boost 
capabilities of the ILL facilities with new methods and modern technologies.

The ILL invites applications for the position of Leader for the Three-Axis 
Spectrometry (TAS) Group in its Science Division following the retirement 
of Dr. R. Currat. The post represents an excellent opportunity for an 
outstanding scientist to develop his/her scientific stature and interact 
with leading scientists from around the world.
The TAS Group is organised within the Science Division (DS) and operates 
seven three-axis instruments exploiting the full spectrum of cold, thermal 
and hot neutrons available at ILL. The TAS group has a long history of 
seminal contributions to the inelastic neutron scattering field. The group 
has been successfully involved with the study of collective excitations in 
crystals from lattice dynamics to magnetic fluctuations in strongly 
correlated electronic systems.

The highly motivated Group Leader will:
·promote the use of TAS methods in all fields of science;
·anticipate and propose technical developments for TAS methods;
·liaise with other instrument Groups at ILL and at other neutron sources;
·have an active personal research programme;·encourage in-house research 
within the TAS Group;
·supervise the scientific and technical staff in the TAS Group.
The successful candidate will:
·have a distinguished research record in solid state physics;
·be experienced in neutron spectroscopy methods and experimental techniques;
·be knowledgeable about other experimental methods;
·be experienced in scientific, personnel and budget management;
·possess a full command of written and spoken English (and, if possible, a 
basic command of French).

The successful candidate will be offered a permanent contract. In addition 
to a competitive salary, certain benefits (reimbursement of removal 
expenses, adaptation allowance, etc.) may be offered.
