Neutron Scattering Instrument Scientist
The Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) Project at the Oak Ridge National
Laboratory invites applications for a Neutron Scattering Instrument
Scientist. The U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science has funded
the design and construction of the SNS, which will provide the most
powerful next-generation short-pulse spallation neutron source in the
world for neutron scattering and related research in broad areas of the
physical, chemical, materials, biological, and medical sciences. The
SNS is a partnership among six DOE national laboratories (Argonne,
Brookhaven, Jefferson, Lawrence Berkeley, Los Alamos, and Oak Ridge),
and is scheduled for completion in 2006.
Successful candidate will provide scientific oversight of design,
installation, commissioning, operation, and promotion of a
neutron-scattering instrument optimized for chemical spectroscopy to be
designed and built at the SNS.
Responsibilities include: lead responsibility, under the guidance of the
Principal Investigator, for the design of a neutron scattering chemical
spectroscopy instrument;
works with other SNS staff and with the Principal Investigator and other
members of the Instrument Development Team to ensure that the design of
the instrument meets the scientific requirements; has lead
responsibility for the construction, installation, commissioning, and
operation of this chemical spectroscopy instrument; interacts with
engineering design/drafting personnel, other scientists, shop personnel,
and external suppliers and contractors; develops links with the User
Community and conduct research in materials science and chemistry using
neutron scattering.
Required qualifications are: Ph.D. plus postdoctoral experience, or
equivalent combination of training and experience, in physical
chemistry, chemical physics, or in a materials chemistry-related
discipline, preferably involving neutron scattering or a related
spectroscopy technique such as IR or Raman. However excellent candidates
from any discipline are encouraged to apply; experience with neutron
scattering instrument development and/or with the development of data
analysis software an asset; strong written and oral communication skills
and the desire to work in a team environment on technically challenging
problems; demonstrated ability to pursue effectively a medium size
project on schedule and within budget.
Qualified and interested candidates are strongly encouraged to submit a
current resume with a list of three references to the Oak Ridge National
Laboratory Employment Opportunities web site at www.sns.gov
<http://www.sns.gov/> and select jobs.
