Instrument Systems Mechanical Engineers
The Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) Project at the Oak Ridge National
Laboratory invites applications for Instrument Systems Mechanical
Engineers. The U. S. Department of Energy's Office of Science has
funded the design and construction of the SNS, which will provide the
most powerful next-generation short-pulse spallation neutron source in
the world for neutron scattering and related research in broad areas of
the physical, chemical, materials, biological, and medical sciences.
The SNS is a partnership among six DOE national laboratories (Argonne,
Brookhaven, Jefferson, Lawrence Berkeley, Los Alamos, and Oak Ridge),
and is scheduled for completion in 2006.
The successful candidates provide design, development, and construction
engineering support for neutron beam line instruments and components.
Major duties and responsibilities are listed below.
* Define mechanical component design requirements for
experimental instrument-related equipment. Interface with the
instrument scientists and with other engineers to identify, evaluate,
and validate requirements.
* Develop, direct, prepare, and/or design mechanical components
for equipment that meets the defined design requirements.
* Provide work direction to designers and drafters to produce
design drawings.
* Prepare procurement documentation and monitor procurement
process for equipment and supplies.
* Participate in design and safety reviews as required.
* Serve as liaison with suppliers and manufacturing shops for
developing and approving cost and schedule estimates.
* Oversee and support installation activities of instrument
mechanical components.
* Ensure compliance with environment, safety, health, and
qualify program requirements including ISMS.
The successful candidates will have a Bachelor's degree in mechanical
engineering with experience in one or more of the following areas:
machine design, vacuum systems, heat transfer, stress analysis and
support design, design of rotating equipment, and high pressure systems
or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Demonstrated
ability to function as part of a design team consisting of scientists,
engineers and designers to meet project cost and schedule goals
required. Good written and verbal communications skills required. Must
be familiar with applicable DOE Orders and safety practices or be able
to apply these Orders and maintain compliance in a DOE facility.
Knowledge of Pro-engineer CAD solid-modeling software desired.
Qualified and interested candidates are strongly encouraged to submit a
current resume with a list of three references to the Oak Ridge National
Laboratory Employment Opportunities web site at www.sns.gov
<http://www.sns.gov/> and select jobs.
