SNS Neutron Scattering Instrument Scientist
The Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory
invites applications for a Neutron Scattering Instrument Scientist. SNS
will be the most powerful short-pulse spallation neutron source in the
world. This unique facility will provide opportunities for up to 2000
researchers each year from universities, national labs, and industry for
basic and applied research and technology development in the fields of
materials science, magnetic materials, polymers and complex fluids,
chemistry, and biology. Funded by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office
of Science, SNS will begin operations in June 2006.
Successful candidate will support the operation and development of the
backscattering spectrometer currently being installed at the Spallation
Neutron Source.
Responsibilities include:
* Participate in the commissioning and operation of the
backscattering spectrometer at the SNS.
* Share duties with other members of the instrument team as
local instrument contact in support of the SNS user program.
* Work with other SNS staff including the instrument support
teams to ensure the safe and reliable operation of the backscattering
spectrometer.
* Develop links with the User Community and conduct research in
science areas that make use of the unique capabilities of the
backscattering spectrometer (examples include materials science,
chemistry, biology, and/or complex fluids).
* Work on the continued development of the backscattering
spectrometer and participate in or lead projects to extend its
capabilities.
* Ensure compliance with environmental, safety, health, and
quality program requirements.
Required qualifications are: Ph.D. plus postdoctoral experience, or
equivalent combination of training and experience, in a materials
science related discipline with an emphasis on soft condensed matter,
preferably involving neutron scattering or a related experimental
technique. Experience with neutron scattering instrument development
and/or with the development of data analysis software is an asset.
Expertise in quasielastic or inelastic neutron scattering is desired,
but excellent candidates from any discipline are encouraged to apply.
Strong written and oral communication skills and the desire to work in a
team environment on technically challenging problems required.
Qualified and interested candidates are strongly encouraged to submit a
current resume with a list of three references to the Oak Ridge National
Laboratory Employment Opportunities web site at www.sns.gov
<http://www.sns.gov/> and select jobs.
