INSTRUMENT SCIENTIST (VN2769)
ISIS Facility, Rutherford Appleton Laboratory

ISIS is a world leading facility for condensed matter research using neutron scattering and muon spectroscopy, with a strong scientific user programme and extensive international links. ISIS is in a period of major expansion, including the construction of a second Target Station and the development of new instrumentation at the existing Target Station.

We are looking for a highly motivated and independent scientist, who will play a key role in our world-leading scientific, instrument design and instrument-operation programme within the ISIS Crystallography/Engineering group in the field of Engineering and Materials Science. The jobholder will also be required to provide an appropriate level of support for the ISIS User Programme, particularly but not exclusively on the engineering instrument Engin-X, and will be strongly encouraged to build collaborations with UK and foreign visiting scientists.

Applicants must have a PhD or equivalent in a relevant science or engineering discipline. The successful candidates will have a proven track record in neutron or x-ray methods, preferably, but not limited to, Engineering and/or Materials Science. The ability to carry out independent research, and an innovative outlook towards instruments and techniques development, will be counted as strong assets. Experience in the use of central facilities and the proven ability to develop instrumentation and/or data analysis software would also be an advantage.

Salary is in the range £22,605 to £34,163 per annum (pay award pending), dependent on experience. An excellent index linked pension scheme and generous leave allowance are also offered.
