Postdoctoral Position in Neutron Scattering Studies of Molecular Magnets
At Hahn-Meitner Institut, Berlin (SF2005/21)
The Hahn-Meitner Institut, is a German National Laboratory and a member
of the Hermann von Helmholtz Association of National Research Centres.
It hosts the Berlin Neutron scattering centre – an outstanding user
open to scientist from all over the world - and also runs several
at the Berlin Synchrotron Radiation Source BESSY.
We invite applications for a postdoctoral position in the field of
magnets. Molecular magnets are finite-sized clusters of interacting
ions, which can be magnetically isolated or interact with neighbouring
clusters on a lattice. In this project the aim is to measure and understand
the magnetic excitation spectrum of these systems using the experimental
technique of neutron scattering. This project is challenging
experimentally. The materials have low energy scales requiring cold
neutron scattering techniques, and low temperature methods to reach the
ground state. Application of magnetic fields and polarisation analysis
used to gain further understanding. On the theoretical side, while exact
computer calculations are ideal they soon become unfeasible with increasing
cluster size, and developing approximations that give the correct physical
insight are crucial.
The appointment is for three years. The candidate should have or be
achieving a PhD in condensed matter physics and ideally should have
experience of neutron scattering. Salary 35000-45000 € / year. The
Hahn-Meitner-Institut is seeking to increase the quota of women scientists.
Therefore, women are especially encouraged to apply. Handicapped
applicants will be given preference to others of equal qualification.
The deadline for application is 15^th Feb 2006; please send a cover letter,
detailed CV and three academic references to Hahn-Meitner-Institut Berlin,
Abt. Personal und Soziales, Glienicker Str. 100, D-14109 Berlin, Germany,
quoting reference number SF2005/21.
