General Scope

The ILL Millennium Programme was launched on 1 January 2000 and gained 
considerable momentum with the Millennium Symposium held in April 2001. 
In the five years since then we have seen enormous progress achieved on 
the ILL's instrumentation and infrastructure, and this to the benefit 
of all the ILL's users. The Reactor Refit Programme has been running in 
parallel to this and it is now nearing completion. We feel that the 
time has now come to review our achievements and the work in progress, 
and to also pave the way for ILL's longer-term future.

Invitation and Programme

We are therefore pleased to invite you to the ILL's Millennium 
Symposium 2006, which will also take in the European Users meeting. 
This will be an event with multiple objectives, including, in 
particular, exchanges and reviews in the following key areas:

1. The achievements of the ILL's Millennium Programme for the 
modernisation of its instrumentation and infrastructure
2. ILL Scientific highlights, and, more particularly, the results we 
have achieved with our new suite of instruments and infrastructure
3. The future of science with neutrons
4. Future perspectives and opportunities for the ILL.


The Symposium will be held at Grenoble's Europole site from midday 
Thursday 27th to midday Saturday 29th April 2006. There will be a focus 
on plenary presentations on the topics mentioned above, and a number of 
prominent speakers have already indicated their willingness to 
participate. There will also be parallel sessions in six different 
topic areas as well as a poster session. The Symposium will be an 
occasion to discuss past and future directions in neutron science and 
their impact on future instrumentation, and this includes the interface 
facilities at ILL. We are also planning a late afternoon session on the 
first day, tailored specifically for the local authorities and a 
broader public.

A Conference dinner will be held on the Friday evening and excursions 
could be possible on the Sunday, although there are no firm 
arrangements for these. We are preparing a programme for accompanying 
family and friends.
