Position Announcement:

Instrument Operator--Powder Diffraction
NIST Center for Neutron Research
National Institute of Standards and Technology

The NIST Center for Neutron Research (NCNR) is seeking a highly motivated
individual with a solid work ethic to work in a team environment for a
full-time position as Instrument Operator for the High-Resolution Neutron
Powder Diffractometer BT-1. NCNR is a national user facility that develops
and makes available to the general scientific community advanced
instrumentation for materials research using neutrons. The BT-1
High-Resolution Neutron Powder Diffractometer uses neutrons to probe the
structure of solid-state materials by obtaining neutron powder diffraction
data for crystallographic analysis by the Rietveld method or other
characterization purposes. It is a versatile neutron powder diffractometer
that can be tailored to the needs of the experiment. The instrument can be
used with furnaces, closed cycle refrigerators, cryostats, and magnets so
that data may be collected at temperatures from 0.02 to 2000 K, and with
magnet fields.

  The position requires a bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or
university in Materials Science, Physical Chemistry, Chemical Engineering,
or Physics. Successful candidates must demonstrate excellent oral and
written communication, interpersonal, and mechanical skills as well as
proficiency with general computing environments; must effectively work as a
team member and also independently to efficiently accomplish assigned
tasks. Responsibilities include supporting staff and visiting researchers
in the use of the High-Resolution Neutron Powder Diffractometer BT-1;
assisting staff and visiting researchers in preparing experiments, loading
and unloading samples, as well as set-up of sample environment equipment;
supporting Instrument Scientists in maintaining, calibrating, and improving
instrument capabilities; providing instruction and support in the use of
computer software and sample environment equipment.
