_*Vacancy for Research Scientist at ILL*_

The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), situated in Grenoble, France, is
Europe's leading research facility for fundamental research using
neutrons. The ILL operates the brightest neutron source in the world,
reliably delivering intense neutron beams to 40 unique scientific
instruments. The Institute welcomes 1700 visiting scientists per year to
carry out world class research in solid state physics, crystallography,
soft matter, biology, chemistry and fundamental physics. Funded
primarily by its three founder members: France, Germany and the United
Kingdom, the ILL has also signed scientific collaboration agreements
with 8 other European countries. The Science Division currently has a
vacancy in its *Diffraction Group* for a *RESEARCH SCIENTIST (M/F)*.

* *The post represents an excellent opportunity for a young postdoctoral
scientist to develop expertise, broaden his/her experience and interact
with leading scientists from around the world. Applications from more
experienced scientists able to obtain a secondment period from their
home organisation will also be considered.

The successful candidate will be co-responsible for the new instrument
SALSA (Strain Analyser for Large and Small scaled engineering
Applications). SALSA is a world-class diffractometer dedicated to the
non-destructive determination of residual stresses deep inside materials
and engineering components, and is used for materials research as well
as industrial measurements. Of particular interest are fatigue and
tensile-testing experiments. A special feature is the sample table, a
Stewart-Gough platform, which allows the precise positioning of
components with dimensions of between around one millimetre and more
than one metre and weighing up to 500 kg.

The successful candidate must be a highly motivated scientist with a PhD
in materials science, engineering, or a related field. Interest in
experimental techniques and instrument development is essential, and
experience in diffraction and computing would be an advantage. In
addition to carrying out his/her own research programme, the successful
candidate will also participate in the development and operation of
SALSA, in assisting ILL’s visiting scientists and industrial clients
with their experiments on SALSA and other ILL instruments, and in the
characterization of engineering components in the FAME38 (Facility for
Materials Engineering) laboratory located nearby.

The successful candidate will be offered a fixed-term contract, the
duration of which will under no circumstances exceed five (5) years. In
addition to a competitive salary, certain benefits (partial
reimbursement of removal expenses, adaptation allowance, etc.) may be
