Postdoctoral Position in the Synthesis and Physics of Correlated
Electron Systems
The Hahn-Meitner Institut, is a German National Laboratory and a member
of the Hermann von Helmholtz Association of National Research Centres.
It hosts the Berlin Neutron scattering centre
(http://www.hmi.hmi.de/bensc/) – an outstanding user facility open to
scientist from all over the world - and also runs several instruments at
the Berlin Synchrotron Radiation Source BESSY. The structural Research
Department undertakes world leading research in quantum magnetism,
superconductivity and novel materials. It offers a state-of-the-art
materials synthesis program as well as a full range of standard sample
characterization facilities including x-ray laue and powder diffraction,
SQUID, transport and thermal measurement.
We invite applications for a postdoctoral position in the field of
correlated electron systems. The position combines the growth and
characterisation of single crystals of correlated electron materials,
along with the study of fundamental physical phenomena via neutron
scattering. The primary method of crystal growth is the optical floating
zone technique and the area of particular interest is magnetism in
transition metal oxides. The candidate should have or be close to
achieving a PhD in condensed matter physics or chemistry and should have
experience of solid state synthesis and crystal growth perferably using
an optical image furnace. Experience of neutron and/or x-ray scattering
are helpful. The appointment is for three years, salary 35000-45000 €/year.
The Hahn-Meitner-Institut is seeking to increase the quota of women
scientists. Therefore, women are especially encouraged to apply.
Handicapped applicants will be given preference to others of equal
qualification.
The deadline for application is 31 July 2006; please send a cover
letter, detailed CV and three academic references to
Hahn-Meitner-Institut Berlin, Abt. Personal und Soziales, Glienicker
Str. 100, D-14109 Berlin, Germany, quoting reference number SF2006/15.
