Summary
The Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory
invites applications for a Neutron Scattering Postdoctoral Research
Fellow - EQU-SANS. SNS will be the most powerful short-pulse spallation
neutron source in the world. This unique facility will provide
opportunities for up to 2000 researchers each year from universities,
national labs, and industry for basic and applied research and
technology development in the fields of materials science, magnetic
materials, polymers and complex fluids, chemistry, and biology. Funded
by the U.S. Department of Energy's Office of Science, SNS will begin
operations in June 2006.
Responsibilities & Qualifications
Successful candidate will be responsible for conducting independent
research using neutron scattering as a primary research tool,
particularly in soft condensed matters using small angle or other
neutron scattering tools. Participate and contribute to the
commissioning of the Extended Q-Range SANS instrument at the SNS.
MAJOR DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:
Conceive and conduct independent and collaborative neutron scattering
experiments on biological soft condensed materials.
Travel to other neutron sources to execute neutron scattering
experiments and analyze the experimental data.
Publish research results in scientific journals.
Participate and contribute to the commissioning and initial experiments
of the EQ-SANS instrument.
Maintains a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of
values and ethics.
Ensures compliance with environment, safety, health and quality program
requirements.
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
ORNL is seeking a post-doctoral researcher with demonstrated expertise
in the area of scattering studies of biological and other soft condensed
matters. Candidates with a recent Ph.D. in Physics, Chemistry,
Biological Sciences, Materials Science, or related fields and a strong
background in Small Angle Neutron Scattering or related techniques will
be considered. Experiences and knowledge with SANS instrument operation,
data treatment etc on pulsed neutron sources are desired, though not
required. Strong written and oral communication skills and the desire to
work in a team environment on scientifically challenging problems are
required. The successful candidate will conduct independent research at
the SANS facilities at the Spallation Neutron Source, the High Flux
Isotope Reactor at Oak Ridge National Laboratory and other neutron
scattering facilities around the world. She or he is also expected to
contribute to the commissioning and initial experiments of the EQ-SANS
instrument.
No Clearance is required for this position.
Relocation assistance is available for this position.
Candidates who identify themselves as 3161-eligible will be required to
supply appropriate documentation upon request.
