HAHN MEITNER INSTITUTE, BERLIN
Department of Magnetism
Postdoc position
(Physicist, Chemist)
We invite applications for a postdoctoral position in the Berlin Neutron
Scattering Centre BENSC at the Hahn-Meitner-Institut Berlin, Germany.
The Hahn-Meitner-Institut is a German National Laboratory and a member
of the Hermann von Helmholtz Association of National Research Centres
and has about 800 employees. It hosts the Berlin Neutron Scattering
Center (BENSC) (http://www.hmi.de/bensc/), a user facility open to
scientists from all over the world. To probe the structure and dynamics
of solids and liquids, BENSC provides the national and international
research community with state-of-the-art neutron scattering equipment
and expertise.
We are seeking a highly motivated young scientist with a strong interest
in strongly correlated oxides. The successful candidate will join the
Novel Materials Group, whose activities focus on strongly correlated
magnetic oxides such as multiferroic manganites, sodium cobaltates
oxides as well as frustrated magnetic systems. The group operates a
solid-state synthesis laboratory featuring two floating zone furnaces
for crystal growth while state of the art sample characterization
equipment such as x-ray diffraction, PPMS(14T), specific heat (12T) etc.
are available within the department.
The successful candidate will also be expected to provide support for
users of the BENSC facility at our high-resolution powder diffractometer
E9 (no more than 20% of time). The candidate should have a broad
knowledge in condensed matter physics or chemistry. A background in
neutron or x-ray scattering, magnetism, crystallography or solid-state
synthesis methods are also highly desired. Staff at BENSC have access to
30% of the beamtime on all neutron scattering instruments for their own
research. Internal beam time is also available at the HMI beam lines at
the BESSY synchrotron.
The appointment is for 3 years, and the salary is according to the
tariff system TVöD. Applicants should send a letter of application, a
detailed CV, two academic references, a list of publications and copies
of degrees to Hahn-Meitner-Institut Berlin, Abt. Personal und Soziales,
Glienicker Str. 100, D-14109 Berlin, Germany, quoting reference No. SF
2007/14 (email: personalabteilung at hmi.de). The deadline for the
application is 1st August 2007.
Details on the BENSC facility can be found on the web under the URL
http://www.hmi.de/bensc/. Activities of the Novel Materials Group can
also be found under http://www.hmi.de/people/argyriou .
