5th LANSCE Neutron School on "Magnetism in bulk and Nanostructured
Materials"
The 5th LANSCE Neutron School will take place between July 23-August 1,
2008 at Los Alamos National Laboratory, Los Alamos, New Mexico.
The focus of the 5th LANSCE Neutron Scattering School is on "Magnetism
in bulk and Nanostructured Materials" investigated by neutron elastic
and inelastic scattering.
Detailed information is available at:
http://lansce.lanl.gov/neutronschool2008
Application for the school is currently open and must be submitted via
the school's website before March 21, 2008.
Scope:
This year's school is designed to be of interest to graduate level
Ph.D. students and postdocs and will emphasize the novel properties of
magnetism in bulk and nanostructured materials. The school is designed
to provide an expansive knowledge of neutron scattering particularly
from magnetic materials, to illustrate applications of neutron
scattering to solve modern problems, and to provide hands-on
opportunities to collect and analyze neutron scattering data.
Experiments will feature small angle neutron scattering, polarized
neutron reflectometry, inelastic scattering, and elastic scattering
including diffraction and total (pair distribution) scattering.
Lectures will be presented by world recognized experts in the field and
will span all levels from introductory concepts to advanced magnetic
systems and techniques.
The school is limited to 30 participants who will be selected from
their application materials including a reference letter and a
statement of "why neutron scattering could be (is) relevant to my
research." Applicants should be full time graduate students or postdocs
in an appropriate discipline related to magnetism. Industrial
researchers and advanced undergraduate students are also invited to
apply. Applicants need not be U.S. citizens; however, preference will
be given to students attending North American universities.
The LANSCE neutron scattering school is supported by the National
Science Foundation and the Department of Energy. The school is
tuition-free and assistance for travel, lodging and subsistence is
available.
