Applicants are sought for a post doctoral position in experimental condensed
matter physics with an emphasis on neutron scattering. The successful
candidate will work on a project to expose and characterize novel strongly
correlated states of matter and the quantum phase transitions between them.
Materials of interest include low dimensional and frustrated quantum
magnets, strongly correlated metals, multiferroic systems, and artificially
structured magnets. Novel phases and excitations in these materials will be
examined using neutron scattering under extreme conditions of stress,
pressure, temperature, magnetic and/or electric fields.
The successful candidate will be stationed at the NIST Center for Neutron
Research and will be involved in some of the first experiments on the Multi
Axis Crystal Spectrometer (MACS). With more than 5×108 neutrons/cm2/s on the
sample and a large solid angle detection system, MACS offers unique
capabilities for the proposed scientific program. There are also
opportunities for involvement in materials synthesis at the Johns Hopkins
University and elsewhere through collaborations.
A Ph. D. degree in Physics is a requirement as are scientific
accomplishments in quantum magnetism, superconductivity, or nano-structured
magnetism. Prior experience in one or more of the following areas will be an
advantage: neutron scattering, x-ray scattering, low temperature physics,
instrument development, high pressure physics, and bulk or nano-structured
materials synthesis.
Applications should be sent electronically to Professor Collin Broholm,
Department of Physics and Astronomy, Johns Hopkins University with email
address broholm at jhu.edu. Please include curriculum vitae, bibliography, and
contact information for three references. To be assured of full
consideration, applications must be received by April 15, 2007. The Johns
Hopkins University is an Equal Opportunity, Affirmative Action Employer.
