Registration is now open: Visit

2009 to register. Abstracts will be reviewed by 15 June 2009

Scope

The aim of the workshop is to provide a platform to discuss the latest
scientific, technological, and instrumental advances in energy-selective
neutron imaging. The meeting follows the successful first NEUWAVE
workshop held at FRM-2 TU Munich in Garching in spring 2008.

Introduction

Conventional neutron imaging exploits the attenuation coefficient over a
broad incident neutron energy spectrum. In recent years, different
methods of obtaining energy-selectivity in the thermal to cold neutron
energy range have been developed, considerably extending the application
range of traditional neutron imaging. Contrast variation, and mapping
structural properties such as crystallographic textures and residual
strains with high spatial resolution can be envisaged. Experimental data
obtained at steady-state and pulsed neutron sources highlight the new
opportunities for energy-dependent imaging applications for material and
engineering sciences. There is an increasing need for discussing the
implementation of time-of-flight neutron imaging at existing and future
pulsed spallation neutron sources, where the energy range can be
selected almost without limitations.

Programme

There will be opportunity to discuss latest developments in neutron
imaging during a Thames walk on Sunday 12 July 2009. The informal
discussions during the walk at NEUWAVE-1 were a big part of the success
of the first workshop and helped to prepare the workshop discussions.
Therefore, participation in the Thames walk is strongly encouraged. (see
Social Programme below)

Topics covered during the workshop on 13-14 July 2009 will include:

Experimental methods

*	All aspects of energy-selective neutron imaging at steady-state
and pulsed spallation sources
*	Bragg-edge spectroscopy
*	Neutron resonance capture imaging via gamma and neutron
detection
*	Detection systems for high time- and position-resolution
*	Potential of high-intensity pulse imaging of fast repetitive
motions and one-time events in a very short time window
*	Combinations of imaging and scattering techniques

Discussion of present beam line proposals

	*	IMAT (ISIS, UK)
	*	VENUS (SNS, USA)
	*	Options at J-PARC (Japan)
	*	Prospects for the European Spallation Source (ESS)

Future applications and challenges of energy-selective imaging

*	Engineering, environmental, and archaeological sciences
*	Crystallographic phase contrast and enhancement, welds, mapping
textures, location of  hydrogen
*	"10 micron resolution challenge" for geoscience, materials
science, archaeological science, and medical applications.

Participants are encouraged to express their interest in the specific
topic of the workshop in a few sentences. The number of talks will be
limited, with much time devoted to discussions. Participants from the
same institute are encouraged to give joint presentations. The workshop
will include a poster session. Talks and posters will be collected and
distributed to the participants on DVD. By submitting your contribution,
you would have agreed to the internal distribution among participants.

There will be an opportunity to visit the nearby ISIS Neutron and Muon
Source on 15th July.

Social Programme

A Thames walk from Abingdon to Oxford is planned for Sunday 12 July 2009
for interested participants. Afterwards there will be opportunities for
punting on the Oxford rivers, visiting historic places, and exploring
the city.
