Neutron Scattering Lead Detector Scientist
The Neutron Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) invites applications for a[cid:image002.png at 01C986BD.BE539760] Neutron Scattering Lead Detector Scientist. With the world's highest flux reactor-based neutron source (the High Flux Isotope Reactor) and the world's most intense pulsed accelerator-based neutron source (the Spallation Neutron Source), ORNL has become the world's foremost center for neutron science. Research at these facilities will encompass the physical, chemical, materials, biological, and medical sciences and will provide opportunities for up to 2000 researchers each year from industry, research facilities, and universities all over the world. The Neutron Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory operates two world class neutron scattering facilities, the High Flux Isotope Reactor and the Spallation Neutron Source. At these facilities several thousand state of the art neutron detectors are used to carry out research in the physical sciences. To insure that these continue to be cutting edge facilities, the detector team supports the activities of the neutron scattering instruments that are in the users program, manufactures and installs detector systems for new instruments, and develops new neutron detectors for future applications. These facilities are experiencing rapid growth, and to keep pace the detector team is looking for a lead scientist who can make a significant contribution in all three areas. This scientist would provide high level support for operating instruments, lead team members who will build and install new systems, and successfully complete neutron detector research that will benefit science in many fields including research at neutron scattering facilities worldwide.
Major duties and responsibilities:
* Works independently or in collaboration with other SNS and HFIR scientists to develop and evaluate concepts for new neutron scattering or imaging detectors.
* Provides expert level support to the scientific teams designing and operating instruments.
* Leads detector teams for the production and installation of detector systems.
* Develops new neutron detector systems to improve the quality of science at neutron scattering facilities.
* Act as a point of contact to help external detector researchers focus on the needs of the neutron imaging and scattering communities.
Qualifications Required:
MS in physics or electrical engineering plus 10 years of experience, or an equivalent combination of training in detector development and production. Experience with detector hardware, particularly within large scale projects, is an asset. Strong written and oral communication skills and the desire to work in a team environment on technically challenging problems required. Demonstrated skills in working with broad scientific communities would be beneficial.
