Mechanical Design Engineer



The Neutron Sciences Directorate at Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) invites applications for a[cid:image002.png at 01C9A6EF.7572C460] Mechanical Design Engineer.  With the world's highest flux reactor-based neutron source (the High Flux Isotope Reactor) and the world's most intense pulsed accelerator-based neutron source (the Spallation Neutron Source), ORNL has become the world's foremost center for neutron science. Research at these facilities will encompass the physical, chemical, materials, biological, and medical sciences and will provide opportunities for up to 2000 researchers each year from industry, research facilities, and universities all over the world. The purpose of this position is to oversee and perform engineering design and analysis on a wide variety of mechanical systems related to Neutron Scattering Instruments. The successful candidate will be responsible for design oversight, testing, and commissioning of Neutron Scattering Instrument components.  Provides technical and administrative support during system commissioning and participates in future R&D activities.



Major duties and responsibilities:



 *   Develops, reviews, and validates project design concepts.
 *   Produces accurate and concise technical reports.
 *   Analyzes engineering problems using traditional analytical methods and finite element analysis (FEA) packages such as ANSYS, ProMECHANICA, or Abaqus.
 *   Prepares presentations for and responds to recommendations from technical design reviews and advisory committees.
 *   Participates in R&D and prototyping of technical equipment.
 *   Proactively identifies and ensures timely resolution of critical issues.
 *   Accurately and reliably communicates technical status and performance to ORNL management.
 *   Reviews and assists line management in the production of design requirement documents.
 *   Accountable for compliance with environment, safety, health, and quality program requirements including ISMS.
 *   Maintains a strong commitment to the implementation and perpetuation of ORNL values and ethics.


Qualifications Required:
BS in engineering or science (MS preferred) and a minimum of 5 years experience in mechanical engineering design of complex engineering systems, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  Must have a sound understanding of mechanics, thermodynamics, fluids, heat transfer and materials and have the ability to quickly grasp complex technical problems.  Must be able to technically analyze engineering problems to validate designs using traditional methods and/or FEA.  Excellent communication skills, ability to work individually or as part of a team and lead from knowledge and experience are essential.  Must have the ability to function as part of a design team consisting of scientific specialist engineers, and designers to meet project cost and schedule goals.  Knowledge of Pro-Engineer CAD solid-modeling software and prior experience in a nuclear field are desired.
