Post-Doctoral position for neutron detection

About ESS

The European Spallation Source (ESS) will be the world’s most powerful neutron source when it becomes operational in 2019, providing unique and powerful neutron scattering instruments to study the properties of materials in all their rich diversity. The ESS will be built in Lund, Sweden, by a collaboration of scientists and engineers from European countries. ESS will, together with other leading research facilities nearby, such as the planned MAX IV synchrotron in Lund and XFEL and Petra III in Hamburg, as well the rich and innovative academic landscape, make the region a world leader in research infrastructures for the study of materials and life science.

In the coming months, the ESS organisation will move from operating within Lund university to become a shareholding company set-up and owned by the Swedish government, with shares to be acquired by other European governments. Information on the conditions of employment by the new company will be given at, or shortly after, the interview.

Description of position

Develop new methods for neutron detection involving gas detectors coupled to thin films of Boron on a metallic substrate. Potential applications exist in all fields of neutron science. This project is part of worldwide effort to develop new neutron detectors.

The successful candidate will be employed by ESS in Lund. He/she will work most of the time at the Institut Laue Langevin, Grenoble, France, where detector expertise exists. The technology will be used to develop neutron detectors for ESS. Tests will use neutron beams at the Research Reactor in Kjeller, Norway, and at the Institut Laue Langevin, Grenoble, France.

Qualifications

PhD in physics and good knowledge in analog and/or digital electronics and data acquisition systems are required. Good ability to independently perform practical and technical work. Experience in gas detectors, vacuum systems and atomic physics would be an advantage.
