[Neutron] PSI / SINQ: Open Position as First Instrument Responsible for POLDI

The Paul Scherrer Institut is a centre for multi-disciplinary research and one of the world’s leading user laboratories. With its 1300 employees it belongs as an autonomous institution to the Swiss ETH domain and concentrates its activities on solid-state research and material sciences, elementary particle physics, energy and environmental research as well as on biology and medicine.

The group Material Science and Simulations (MSS, http://mss.web.psi.ch/) part of NUM/ASQ performs research in the structural and mechanical properties of metals, alloys and composites using in-situ testing facilities at the neutron Spallation Source (SINQ) and at the Swiss Light Source (SLS), meanwhile exploiting synergies with computational modelling. A position has been opened for a duration of 3 years as

                        with an education in Materials Science Engineering

Your tasks:
You will support users of the Pulse Overlap time-of-flight Diffractometer (POLDI) and participate in an instrumental upgrade. You will perform research including in-situ mechanical testing on steels, alloys and high temperature materials together with PhD students performing experiments at POLDI. You will contribute to build up a competitive in-house research program at POLDI, being a competent partner for internal and external users and industry. Together with colleagues, you help to update the beamline hardware to meet new challenges.

Your profile:
You hold a PhD in materials science or materials science engineering, and have experience in using neutrons and eventually X-rays. You are a flexible team worker who is able to work on different mid-term projects. You have computer programming skills required to develop new and improve existing user-friendly software for data acquisition and data analysis. You can propose, carry out and publish experimental research of the highest quality.

Your skills:
Your excellent communication skills in English and preferably also German and your motivation and experience, allow you to contribute to the success of the Materials Science team. You have the interpersonal flair needed to successfully guide and assist external and internal user groups and communicate with industry.
