The University of New South Wales (UNSW) and the Australian Nuclear
Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO) have strong research and
teaching links. They are seeking to strengthen these links through the
creation of a joint academic position between the School of Materials
Science and Engineering at UNSW and the Bragg Institute at ANSTO.

The School of Materials Science and Engineering is seeking applications
for academic staff at the lecturer level to contribute to its research
and teaching activities. The School currently has 16 research and
teaching academic staff plus another 30 research only academics and
approximately 130 higher degree research students. The School has
strengths in structural materials, in particular ceramics and
metallurgy, electronic, energy and other functional materials, particle
science and technology and sustainable materials processing, in
particular in process metallurgy.

The 100-strong Bragg Institute is the leading group of neutron and X-ray
scatterers in the Southern Hemisphere, with responsibility for the user
program and research at the new 20-MW OPAL Research Reactor, along with
some in-house X-ray equipment and formal involvement with the
Australian Synchrotron in Melbourne. The Institute is multidisciplinary
with applications in physics, chemistry, crystallography, bio- and earth
sciences and engineering.

Applicants are being sought to strengthen and be future leaders in these
organisations' internationally-leading research. The successful
applicant will conduct research with the aim of developing an
understanding of novel improvements to existing materials to take them
to more extreme environments. The research will have a specific focus on
nuclear materials science and the use of neutron-scattering and
synchrotron radiation methods. Specific areas of interest may include
relevant material physics, metallurgy, advanced ceramics, structural
integrity and atomistic modelling. They will be able to demonstrate
strong communication and organisational skills, outstanding research
leadership relative to opportunity in the areas of focus with
pre-existing experience, or potential in the view of the selection
committee, in attaining competitive research funding and recruiting and
leading a research team, including research students, and high quality
undergraduate teaching.

The level of appointment may be from Lecturer to Professor and will be
based upon academic criteria at UNSW. The successful appointee will is
