The NIST Center for Neutron Research (NCNR) is seeking an associate to operate and maintain sample environment equipment for neutron scattering research. The NCNR is a national user facility that develops and makes available to the general scientific community advanced neutron instrumentation. The role of sample environment staff is to enable users of the NCNR to perform scattering experiments subjecting their samples to extreme temperatures, pressures, and fields. The applicant will be primarily responsible for preparing and operating the equipment during the course of an experiment along with general maintenance. Experience with one or more of the following equipment is preferred but not required: superconducting magnets, He-3 dilution refrigerators, and closed-cycle refrigerators.
Other duties will include instructing non-experts in correct techniques and safe operation of equipment, troubleshooting electronics and software problems, and maintenance of sample environment group areas including inventory and restocking of supplies.
The position is full time and requires a bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university in chemistry, materials science, engineering, or physics. Successful candidates must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication, organizational and mechanical skills, as well as proficiency with general computing environments. They must be able to work effectively in a team as well as efficiently perform assigned independent tasks.
The position will be open until November 10, 2011 or until filled.
