Postdoctoral Research Position on Detector Simulation
The Science Directorate at the European Spallation Source (ESS) in Lund, Sweden, invites applications for a "Postdoctoral Researcher on Detector Simulation".

Description of position/department
The Detector group is part of the Instrument Support Division under the Science Directorate. The Instrument Support Division provides the technological tools required for the design, construction and operation of the neutron instruments at ESS. The detector group is currently focused on performing the necessary research and development for alternatives to He-3 detectors for neutron detection.  

Description of main responsibilities
The successful candidate will provide simulation expertise for the detector group. This is in close collaboration with existing efforts at FRM-II in Munich and the ILL in Grenoble. This collaboration focuses upon gaseous detectors, with thin layers of Boron-10 as a converter material. The successful candidate will lead this collaborative effort and build upon existing results in order to understand the performance and optimise the design of future such detectors. 

Qualifications
PhD in physics, computing or any of the natural sciences.
Prior experience with using simulation tools and Monte Carlo techniques are required, as is a demonstrated ability in data analysis. In particular, familiarity with detector simulation and simulation programs such as GEANT, MCSTAS, MCNP, or GARFIELD, etc. would be advantageous. Good programming and computing skills are a necessity.
As this position will involve working closely with collaborating institutes, a willingness to spend extended periods posted abroad and to be able to work effectively in a team is essential.  
Experience of working in an international environment is essential.
Excellent oral and written English skills are a prerequisite; knowledge of other European languages would be an advantage.
Both candidates who have recently finished their PhD and those with several years of relevant work experience are encouraged to apply.

Duration & Location
The position is time limited, 24 months, and will be based at the ESS office in Lund, Sweden with extended periods at other facilities, in particular FRM-II in Munich and ILL in Grenoble.
