The Institut Laue-Langevin (ILL), situated in Grenoble, France, is
Europe's leading research facility for fundamental research using
neutrons. The ILL operates the brightest neutron source in the world,
reliably delivering intense neutron beams to 40 unique scientific
instruments. The Institute welcomes more than 2000 visiting scientists
per year to carry out world-class research in solid-state physics,
crystallography, soft matter, biology, chemistry and nuclear and
particle physics. Funded primarily by its three founder members: France,
Germany and the United Kingdom, the ILL has also signed scientific
collaboration agreements with 12 other countries. The Science Division
currently has a vacancy:
*RESEARCH SCIENTIST **(M/F)*
*Duties:*
Working within the "Nuclear and Particle Physics (NPP)" group, you will
be responsible for gamma spectroscopy experiments and instrumentation.
As co-responsible for the mass separator Lohengrin (PN1) you will
support experiments on gamma-ray and conversion-electron spectroscopy of
very neutron-rich nuclei, produced in nuclear fission. In addition, you
will be actively involved in gamma ray spectroscopy experiments using an
external neutron beam, notably in European collaborations working with
Ge detector arrays such as EXOGAM. You will also be responsible for
NPP's Ge detectors, including its two clover detectors. Besidescarrying
out your own active research programme and establishing scientific
collaborations, you will be expected to assist ILL's visiting scientists
with their experiments on gamma spectroscopy.
*Qualification and experience:*
You hold a PhD in physics and have a solid background in gamma-ray
spectroscopy with multi-detector setups, Ge detectors and digital data
acquisition systems. Strong interest and skills in instrumentation,
computing and technical development are essential. The post represents an
excellent opportunity for postdoctoral scientists to develop expertise,
broaden experience and interact with leading scientists from around the
world. Applications from more experienced scientists able to obtain a
secondment period from their home institution are welcome.
*Language skills:*
As an international research centre, we are particularly keen to ensure
that we also attract applicants from outside France. You must have a
sound knowledge of English and be willing to learn French (a language
course will be paid for by the ILL). Knowledge of German would be an
advantage.
